Team Ireland’s hopes of making it to the knockout phase of the World University Games are fading after a 1-0 defeat to Canada in Taipei today.
Donegal pair Niamh McLaughlin and Amber Barrett both started for the Girls in Green today, but Ireland fell to a narrow loss.
Joelle Gosselin netted the only goal of the game for Canada in the 65th minute and the Irish couldn’t get back.
Milford’s Barrett was joined in the team by Greencastle’s McLaughlin, who was passed fit to play despite sustaining a dead leg in Friday’s 0-0 draw against Mexico.
Barrett had gone close to putting Ireland in front in the first half.
But Ireland now need Canada to defeat Mexico if they are to advance.
