IT’S NOT TOO often these days that Donegal boxing has little to celebrate at The National Stadium, but a walkover win for Illies Golden Gloves’ John Moran was the sole slice of success at the weekend’s finals on the South Circular Road.
Moran took home the Youth 2 title at 44kgs, but didn’t have to fight for the crown.
The Illies man’s title win was the only reason to cheer at the Boy 4, Youth 1 and Youth 2 finals in Dublin.
Dunfanaghy’s Sean Kelly, Carrigart man Jack Green, Leon Gallagher of Finn Valley and St Bridget’s Clonmany powerhouse Edward McEleney were all beaten in their respective finals.
McEleney was aiming to add to his pair of Irish title, but in the Youth 2 91+ kgs, the big Clonmany puncher lost out against Martin John Mongan from Ennis, who took a unanimous decision win.
Finn Valley’s Gallagher, a three-time Irish champion and European Schoolboy bronze medalist, had scored an impressive semi-final win over Edward Barrett, but he came unstuck in his final against Setanta’s Tommy Hyde at 75kgs.
In the 46kgs final, Carrigart man Green was beaten by Clonmel’s Jordan Sheehan 3-0.
Dunfanaghy ABC’s Kelly overcame Trojans Ray Collins in the Youth 1 46kgs semi-final on Friday night, but he lost out to St Michael’s Athy man Terry Donoghue in the decider.
Three Donegal boxers suffered defeats in Boy 4 semi-finals on Saturday.
Tom Doherty of Raphoe ABC was beaten by Spartan’s Cathal Crowley at 86kgs, Convoy’s Ryan Ward-Mulrine missed out against Tramore’s Luke Hurley at 54kgs while Mayfield’s Trevor McCarthy just had the edge on Dungloe ABC’s Fionn McRuairi at 52kgs.
