THE ROUND 4B qualifier between Donegal and Galway has been confirmed for Croke Park on Saturday week, August 1.
Rory Gallagher’s team went down 0-11 to 0-10 against Monaghan in Sunday’s Ulster SFC but have the opportunity to get their All-Ireland series back on track against the Tribesmen.
Galway lost to Mayo in the Connacht SFC but then got back on track, on Saturday they were 1-11 to 0-8 winners over Derry.
The counties have only been paired together four times in championship football. In 1974, it was Galway who won 3-13 to 1-14 in the All-Ireland semi-final and nine years later, Val Daly scored a late goal to give Galway a 1-12 to 1-11 win – again in the All-Ireland semi-final.
Then, in 2003, following a 0-14 to 1-11 draw at Croke Park in the All-Ireland quarter-final, Donegal came out on top in the replay at McHale Park in Castlebar, 0-14 to 0-11. And in 2009 it was John Joe Doherty’s Donegal who came out on top – 0-14 to 0-13 – in a fourth round qualifier at Markievicz Park in Sligo.
Tyrone will face Sligo in the 4pm curtain-raiser, while Donegal and Galway will throw in at 6pm.
