A GROUP OF STUDENTS from Loreto Secondary School in Letterkenny are asking for participants at Sunday’s North-West 10k to ‘donate your steps’ as part of a project to raise awareness for the Syrian Refugee crisis.
The group from Class Fiachra, a development education class in Transition Year, have launched their project ‘Steps 4 Syria’.
The group are simply asking for participants to sign up to donate their steps for free.
“It takes 5,000 km for a Syrian refugee to walk from Damascus, the capital city of Syria, to Dublin,” the group explains.
“We need a minimum of 500 people to donate their distance so we can reach our target of 5,000 km. We are not asking for any money, we are simply asking you to donate your steps.
“As a class we have joined with the North West 10k committee. We are asking you to donate your steps to our project.
“Please note that there is no added cost to your registration fee.
“Our aim is to raise awareness of the Syrian refugee crisis. We hope to educate people on this topic.
“Over 12 million Syrians have fled their country because they are being persecuted due to civil war. Their homes are being destroyed. They have nothing left.
“They are no longer safe in their own country. 20,000 Syrians have died at sea trying to reach safety. This is the equivalent of the population of Letterkenny. Millions have fled to neighbouring countries and are now trying to reach Europe in search of a better life for their families.
“We would appreciate your support. Please like our Facebook Steps 4 Syria, follow us on Twitter steps4syria and follow us on Instagram steps4syria. Thank you.”
The North West 10 k will take place on Sunday the 1st May at 2 p.m. Pre-registration will take place in Letterkenny Community Centre at 5pm to 6.30p.m from this evening until Friday.
Under teacher Shiobaun McGee, the group includes: Alyssa Bibat, Cora Bond, Ciana Brogan, Megan Burke, Emma Bundschu, Claudia Cuskelly, Hannah Doherty, Caitlin Gallagher, Sophie Gallagher, Ellie Green, Katie Hassett, Aoife Holian, Lisa Kennedy, Clara Lowry, Rachel Mullen, Michaela McGinley, Aoibheann McGee, Siobhan McParland, Dearbhla McDermott, Isabella Patton, Ciara Reynolds, Cora Rodgers, Megan Skinnader, Orlaith Walsh.
