A group of Inishowen footballers have brandished as a ‘disgrace’ a clash of games this Sunday which has put them in a position of having to choose between finals in two sports.
Six players now have to pick between playing for Greencastle FC in the Inishowen League Cup final or for Moville in the Donegal senior ladies GAA final.
The soccer final takes place in Buncrana at 5pm with the GAA final in Convoy at 4.30pm.
“It’s a disgrace,” said Sarah Faulkner, one of the players affected.
“The Inishowen ones are saying that they didn’t know about the county final until the weekend there. But the county final date was set weeks ago.
“A similar thing happened last year. We had to play for Moville in the county final in the afternoon and then rushed off to play for Greencastle in the Ulster Cup final.
“We were told that it wouldn’t happen again – but this is worse.
“If this was men playing, it wouldn’t happen. I’m disgusted and disappointed at how we’re being treated. It’s so unfair to ask girls who have committed to both sports all year to now chose when it comes to finals.
“It’s so unfair. Hopefully someone will see some sense and move the game. There are plenty of weekends to play the game.”
