THERE IS disappointment among Donegal athletes after confirmation that the 2020 Walled City Marathon in Derry will not be going ahead.
The Walled City Marathon had originally been scheduled for May 31 and hundreds had been expected to take part.
The 2019 winner was Eric Koech and the female winner was Natalie Hall of Armagh A.C.
The Walled City Marathon was established in 2013 as part of Derry’s celebrations as the inaugural UK City of Culture.
Many of the participants came from Donegal’s athletics clubs and the cancellation will serve as a big disappointment.
Organisers did not specify a reason, but said it had been called ‘due to a number of factors’.
“It is with regret that the organisers of the Walled City Marathon have taken the decision to cancel this year’s marathon event,” a statement said.
“The race has been cancelled due to a number of factors outside the control of the race organisers.
“We would like to thank all supporters of the Walled City Marathon and hope that they will continue to support the event next year. All entrants will be provided with a full refund within the next 14 days.
“We are encouraged by the continued growth of the 10-miler which sold out in record time this year and we look forward to further building on that event whilst working to prepare for the marathon again in 2021.”
