ON A DULL wet day in Ramelton, it was Derry City Reserves who emerged victorious 3-0 over Swilly Rovers.
Swilly Rovers 0-3 Derry City reserves
The win helps the Candystripes keep the pressure on champions Cockhill as the league enters the closing stages. The top three teams must all meet each other twice before the destination of this year’s title is decided.
Derry began the game brightly with Keith Ward setting the tempo for the Derry men. Swilly’s defence stood strong for the first 25 minutes under intense pressure from the visitors and on 25 minutes Derry made the breakthrough when Jordan Allen finished off a sweeping move to blast the ball into the roof of the Swilly goal from close range.
Derry continued to heap pressure on the Swilly defence producing some fantastic football in spite of the conditions. Derry got their second goal when Conor McDermott managed to race clear of the Swilly defence to slot coolly past Gareth Wade in the Swilly goal. Derry went in 2-0 up at half time.
Derry continued their pressure in the second half with Swilly not working Mark McElhinney in the Derry goal. Derry soon found the break through again when Conor McDermott got his second and Derry’s third effectively killing off the game.
