A Raphoe ABC select gained big-fight experience last night at Villa Park in Birmingham.
Before a crowd of over 600 people in the Holte Suite at the home of Aston Villa FC, the Raphoe lost by seven bouts to four.
Unbeaten Donegal middleweight boxer Jason Quigley, now based in Sheffield, was among the crowd alongside fellow unbeaten professionals Charlie Williams and Yves Ngabu.
“It was a great experience for our boxers in a massive stadium with an electric atmosphere,” Raphoe ABC Chairman Peter O’Donnell said.
“There were some very tight fights and three of our loses were on split decisions.”
Among Raphoe’s winners were the ever-reliable Dennis Lafferty. Dennis ‘The Menace’ overcame Bradley Ferrie of the Second City BC in Birmingham. Lafferty has a knack of pulling big results from the hat and he did so again here against former British Youth champion Ferrie.
Convoy ABC’s former Irish champion Bryan McNamee was red hot on the night and inflicted a unanimous decision defeat upon Ollie Cassidy (Priory Park BC).
Dominic Bradley from Errigal BC overcame Louis Coley in one of the fights of the night while Craig Bigger from Cookstown beat Coley’s brother, Brad.
Raphoe ABC’s Liam McMonagle suffered an unfortunate loss to Dylan Cliffe. McMonagle had a punch in transit when the referee called ‘break’ and fell foul to a public warning.
Eoin McGarrell, another former Irish champion, was well in his fight with Jay Turner until Turner hit the bullseye. A fire-cracking body blow wounded McGarrell and the fight was halted in the third stanza.
World and European Youth bronze medallist Judge Gallagher from Two Castles ABC in Newtownstewart was set to guest for Raphoe on the night but his opponent, Joe Collins, withdrew from the bout on Friday morning.
