After falling a goal behind in the first half, the task got even more difficult for Peter McHugh’s team when Sligo/Leitrim doubled their lead in the early moments of the second half.
Sub Oran Fallon of Keadue Rovers pulled one back for the Donegal side, but the slick Sligo/Leitrim side added a third late in the day.
“With some luck we might have got a draw, but it just wasn’t to be,” McHugh said.
“Sligo dominated the first half, but we came into it well.
“To be fair, they were better prepared for the game than we were. We probably weren’t quite ready for the game.
“We always try and play football. Sligo were very direct and that system worked for them.”
Donegal will aim to bounce back in three weeks’ time when they take on Cavan/Monaghan.
