THE popular Strabane Lifford Half Marathon has become the latest event to be cancelled.
In response to concerns about the spread of coronavirus, Derry City and Strabane District Council decided to cancel the event, which was to take place on May 17.
The 13.1-mile race was due to take place on Sunday, May 17 with some 1,200 participants were expected.
However, it has now been confirmed that, following a Council members briefing today at the Guildhall, the Half Marathon is among the forthcoming Council events to be cancelled.
Full refunds will be issued to those who had entered in due course.
The City of Derry Jazz Festival and the Angling Fair have also been cancelled.
“Other events and services continue to be under constant review,” a statement said.
“The decision was made following a members briefing this morning in the Guildhall, as a precautionary measure and in the interest of the health and safety of the public as the local authority reviewed its contingency planning to reduce the risk of COVID-19 across the Council area.”
