ERRIGAL CYCLING CLUB’S Conor Halvey produced an excellent performance to come third in the North Pole Cycling Club’s St Patrick’s Day race.
The 15-year-old is part of Cycling Ireland’s Talent Team 2016 and was involved in the seven-man breakaway around the 75km course that started and finished in Burt and took in Manorcuningham and Galdonagh.
It was a remarkable finish considering Halvey had to get dispensation to compete in the race against A1, A2 and A3 cyclists because of the fact he is a youth and competed marvellously against an experienced field, losing out only in a sprint finish.
Last weekend, Halvey finished second overall in Rás Mayo, where he was also the winner of the polka-dot jersey for the most consistent climber on the climbs.
Halvey, from Letterkenny, was the top Donegal finisher and Ronan McLaughlin, who is from Muff and part of the Foyle Cycling Club team in Derry, was fifth.
The A1, A2, A3 race was won by Chris McGlinchey from Chain Reaction, with Jake Gray of the Nicholas Roche team in second, with Ballymoney Cycling Club’s Aaron Swan fifth.
Mark Gallagher from Four Masters Cycling Club was fourth in the A4 race.
