COCKHILL CELTIC FLEXED their muscle with a hammering of Fanad United this afternoon in the Ulster Senior League.
Cockhill Celtic 8-0 Fanad United
Gerard McLaughlin scored a hat-trick for the Buncrana based side, who bagged six goals in a storming second half.
On 18 minutes Cockhill got the opening goal when Peter Doherty’s cross was partly cleared and the ball luckily fell to Jimmy Bradley who poked home from four yards.
Cockhill grew in confidence and began to dominate and got a second on 25 minutes when McLaughlin raced through to slot home giving Fanad’s keeper no chance.
For the remainder of the half Cockhill dominated but couldn’t get the third, Jason Breslin coming closest on 40 minutes with a pile driver from the edge of the box. The half-time score was Cockhill 2-0 Fanad.
Cockhill started the second half on fire and got a third goal on 48 minutes when Ronan Doherty (O) set up Gerry Gill to finish smartly from 12 yards.
Fanad’s heads dropped after this and Cockhill kicked on and got a fourth when Ronan Doherty (N) scored a fine solo goal on 51 minutes.
He was then replaced on by substitute Mark Coyle and Coyle set McLaughin up for a simple tap in after beating Fanad’s off side trap. Coyle then got a sixth goal on 60 minutes when Jimmy Bradley sent him in on goal and he coolly chipped the ball into the Fanad net.
Coyle then was brought down in the box on 62 minutes and McLaughlin got his hat-trick goal from the penalty spot.
Substitute Derek Doherty then got Cockhill’s eighth when Gerry Gill sent him through and he flicked the ball high into the Fanad net.
Derry City 3-0 Bonagee United
Derry City Reserves remained in the title hunt with this comprehensive victory over Bonagee Utd at the Templemore Complex.
The home side went into this game with a very young side, and manager Kevin Mahon will be pleased with their performance, which was watched by first team manager, Kenny Shiels. The Candystripes were very much on top from the kick off and it took only 18 minutes to register their first score.
Ryan Doherty dispossessed Kevin Barr in the left back position, and his cross into the area was met by Ronan Curtis, who slammed the ball home from six yards. They dominated the remainder of the first half but only for Bonagee goalkeeper, Eugene Ferry, the score line may have been much more.
The second half began as the first ended, with Derry playing some excellent football. They got their second in the 72nd minute, when Sam Todd headed home a Conor McDermott corner. Nine minutes later, it was three. A long ball by Rory Holden reached Cathal Farren, who lobbed Ferry from 20 yards.
