Patsy McGonagle might be ‘Mr Athletics’ both here in Donegal and further afield but he’s on the outside looking in with a world champion today.
McGonagle was Irish team manager for four Olympic Games, six World Championships and six European Championships in a glittering career for the Finn Valley AC stalwart. In his time in charge, Ireland came home with two Olympic medals, nine World medals and 27 European medals.
However, the Co-Vid19 restrictions mean McGonagle can’t attend the National Senior Championships at Morton Stadium in Santry this weekend, so instead he’s having to make do with a peak through the fence alongside Rob Heffernan – the Cork native who was world champion in the 50k race-walk in Moscow in 2013, a year after his bronze medal at the Olympics in London.
