CIARA DOOGAN of Errigal Cycling Club was the spectacular winner of both the time trail and the road race at the Junior National Cycling Championships in Cong, Co Mayo.
On Saturday, over a 24km course, the Gortahork native won the women’s time trial in a time of 36:56, a time that was almost four minutes better than the second-placed rider, Emily Birchall of NRPT, who clocked 40:48, while Naoise Sheridan of Orwell Wheelers in 41:15.
Sunday’s road race was over 55km and Doogan laid down her marker by attacking by the 15-kilometre mark to end up winning by five minutes from Emily Birchall.
Last week the 17-year-old produced a fine ride to finish 25th in the Women’s Junior Road Race at the European Road Championships in Tartu, Estonia. It was her first major international road race championships.
