CHRISTY TOYE’S last minute, first touch goal on Saturday sealed a 3-12 to 0-11 win  for Donegal over Galway in the All-Ireland qualifiers Round 4B.
The St Michael’s clubman (pictured above) has developed a knack of scoring goals in the championship at Croke Park. Saturday’s was his fifth – and that’s a feat no Donegal player can match.

Toye was only 19 when he goaled against Meath at the same stage of the 2002 championship as Micky Moran’s team sealed a 1-13 to 0-14 victory.
A year later, Toye finished off a flowing move at Hill 16 in the All-Ireland semi-final against Armagh, who were then the holders of Sam Maguire. The contest unravelled for Donegal, under the management of Brian McEniff, and and after the harsh sending off of Raymond Sweeney, Armagh ran out winners on a 2-10 to 1-9 scoreline.

Three years later, in 2006, when Brian McIver was in the Donegal manager’s hotseat and in the All-Ireland quarter-final against Cork, it was Toye who punched home on four minutes. However, Donegal would end up losing 1-11 to 1-10.

After a couple injury-ravaged years, Toye hadn’t played for Donegal since 2009 as Jim McGuinness took over in 2010. Against Kildare in the All-Ireland quarter-final of 2011, with the score 0-7 to 0-7 McGuinness summoned Toye from the bench and pointed towards the full-forward line. There was an instant impact and Donegal went onto win an epic encounter 1-12 to 0-14 after extra-time.
