THE GROUPS FOR the Donegal senior and intermediate football championships will be drawn again for 2016, it has been confirmed.
The group format came into being for the 2013 campaign and groups were initially drawn for a two-year cycle, with reverse fixtures from the first year to the next.
While many felt that the groups drawn for 2015 would remain in place for this year, the Donegal Competitions Controls Committee (CCC) have confirmed to Donegal Sport Hub that a new draw will be conducted.
Last year, a successful motion from the Killybegs club meant that the draws will be re-done.
As stipulated by the Killybegs proposal, teams who had two home games last year will be away twice in 2016 while teams who had two away games in 2015 will play twice at home this year.
No date has been set for the draw, but it is likely that it will be conducted in late February.
Last Monday at the monthly county committee meeting, Ardara proposed a motion calling for the semi-finalists from last year to be ‘seeded’, which would have kept Naomh Conaill, St Eunan’s, Kilcar and St Michael’s apart.
However, the motion didn’t get a seconder, meaning all teams will be in an open draw.
While the senior and intermediate championships will be re-drawn, the situation on the Junior A Championship is unclear with the CCC set to discuss the matter at its meeting on Wednesday night.
Next Monday, the CCC will present its master fixture list to clubs, who will have three weeks to come back with submissions. The final list will be agreed at the March county committee meeting.
