THE BRIAN MCCORMICK SPORTS CUP semi-finals might be a long way off but its participants were decided this afternoon with the various Area finals contested.
Castlefin Celtic (pictured above by Gary Foy) had a resounding win over Raphoe Town in the Lifford Area, Milford United won the Milford Area, St Catherine’s reclaimed the Donegal Town Area, while Glenea come out on top in the Gweedore Area.
Castlefin Celtic 5-1Â Raphoe Town
Castlefin won the Lifford Area Shield Final of the Brian McCormick Cup for the third year in a row after a comprehensive victory over Raphoe on Sunday.
Castlefin took the lead in the 15th minute when Ronan Tourish picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box and went on to score. They doubled their lead in the 25th minute when a Ronan Tourish through ball to his brother Barry saw him shoot to the corner of the net.
Just before the break Damien McAnnaney made it three nil after he reacted to a loose ball from a Peter Bryson header which was cleared off the line.
Raphoe pulled a goal back in the 70th minute when Christy Bogle scored from the penalty spot after Peter Mc Glynn was fouled in the box. Â Five minutes later JP Malley made it 4-1 to Castlefin after he hit a first time shot to the net from a Simon Mc Glinchey pass. Ronan Tourish completed the scoring in the 85th minute when Castlefin were awarded a penalty for hand ball.
Tourish`s penalty was saved by the Raphoe keeper but he converted the rebound.
Milford United 2-1Â Kilmacrennan Celtic
Milford United overcame local rivals Kilmacrennan Celtic in a tense and exciting Area Shield Final at Moyle View Park by two goals to one.
Kilmacrennan started strongest and took the lead after 15 minutes when Timmy Burke tapped home a Mickey McLaughlin cross. Â Milford responded well dominating the final 25 minutes of half scoring twice through Adam Seerinha and then a goal from Gary Merritt.
The second half was a tough encounter with both teams pushing hard for a goal. Caolan Mc Gettigan had a few good saves but gilt edge chances fell to Merritt and Seerinha but both failed to convert. Milford clinched the Area Shield and now face St Catherine’s in the Brian Mc Cormick Cup semi-final.
St Catherine’s 3-1Â Cappry Rovers
St Catherine’s overcame Cappry Rovers in the Area Final of the Brian McCormick Sports Cup.
The Killybegs side started quickest and had a few good chances in the first 20 minutes but couldn’t make a breakthrough.
Cappry opened the scoring on 25 minutes when Luke O’ Farrell tapped home at the back post after a counter attack.
St Catherine’s were back on level terms on 35Â minutes when Barry Rose scored. The Saints went into the lead in the 43rd minute through Shane O’Rourke who finished to the bottom corner with a shot from the edge of the box.
Cappry dominated the second half and will be disappointed not to have found an equaliser. Barry Rose sealed it for St Catherine’s in the 88th minute with his second of the day.
Glenea United 2-1 Gweedore United
Glenea United won the Area Final with a hard fought victory in the Brian McCormick Cup.
Glenea opened the scoring on 35 minutes when after good work down the right by Daniel Cannon his cross was headed home from close range by Dean Gallagher.
Gweedore had a chance to equalise on 40 minutes when after good work by Ciaran McFadden and John Mc Laughlin the ball was moved onto Jamie McGee but he dragged his effort wide.
In the second half Glenea started brightly and looked to double their lead but it was the away side that started to dominate the game and on 70 minutes Gweedore equalised when Shane O’ Donnell scored direct from a free-kick.
Both sides pushed hard for a winner and just as it looked like extra-time Glenea found a winner on 85 minutes when after a good run down the left Shane Coll saw his cross headed goal wards by Dean McCarry, only for Brian Gallagher to clear off the line but his clearance landed at Sean Coll and he drove the ball home.
Best for Glenea were Sean Coll and Daniel Cannon while Paul Doogan and Liam McMullan were best for Gweedore United.
