CARLEIGH IRVING has guaranteed at least a bronze medal at the 2019 European Schoolboy/girls Championships.
This morning in Tbilisi, Georgia, Irving overcame Turkey’s Ozkan Pinar in a 46kgs quarter-final.
The Illies Golden Gloves woman took a 4-1 split decision win over Pinar following a comfortable display of ring craft.
Remarkably, the Italian judge at ringside scored the bout 30-27 in favour of Pinar, but the judges from Georgia, Ukraine, Kosovo and Lithuania all came down 30-27 on the side of Irving.
Recently, Irving overcame Angelina Duffy in the Irish Cadet Championship final and on her debut in an Irish vest she defeated Italian Lambo Mariagrazia.
Later today, Thomas Ward – a Ballyshannon native fighting for the Carrickmore club in Tyrone – faces Yahor Prudnikau from Belarus in a 68kgs quarter-final, where he will aim to also seal a bronze.
