Doherty put the foot down for a comfortable win, completing the course in 31:59.
For Mooney, it was, as he quipped at the finish line at the Letterkenny Community Centre, ‘busier than the normal 9-5.’.
This morning, Mooney completed his first ever triathlon, finishing seventh in theb Liam Ball Triathlon, held at the Templemore Sports Complex in Derry.
“It went good,” Mooney said of his triathlon debut.
“The swim was a bit slow but I enjoyed the bike and the run. I took about 15 places back in the run. It’s hard to forget that I’m not a runner anymore!”
Mooney made up great time on the run to come seventh overall in an event that attracted 208 participants. He’d swam in 12:05 before doing the bike loop in 34:51 and his run was 16:08, 48 seconds quicker than anyone else.
He said: “I might have run seven times this week but I’ve swam five times and been on the bike three times. I just want to see how good I can go.”
He completed the triathlon in 64 minutes and 14 seconds.
In Letterkenny, Mooney came good in the last 200 metres to beat Mark McPaul of Finn Valley into second spot.
Mooney, who represented Northern Ireland in the 1,500m at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, said: “When I come second here I have to appreciate it.
“I thought I”d come in and see if I could stick with Ciaran but it didn’t last too long!
“I got a second wind coming up by The Grill. It was a good battle and it was a good day all round.”
