OVER two hundred children from the parish attended the club’s Summer Camps over the last fortnight.
Each child received club shorts, socks and tops, a trip to the cinema and excellent coaching from club coaches and volunteers. Thank you to all the club coaches and volunteers who gave up their time to ensure your children enjoyed what has been an overall success this year again.
Fundraising
It was great to hear so many good reports about the Summer Camps and how they were great value. Contrary to popular belief, the Club receives no funding but depends on the generosity of club members, parents/guardians and the local community to cover the day to day costs of running the Club and providing top class coaching for our youths (through training courses for our coaches).
Please support your local Club by buying a Lotto every week and supporting our fundraising initiatives held throughout the year. If every parent/guardian of those who attended the Camps bought a Lotto every week and supported only one fundraising initiative per year, the Club would receive approx €23,000 which could go to providing better quality training for our coaches; building a covered stand; maintaining pitches etc which can only be for the betterment of our younger members. The Club, as always, is grateful of all/any support you can give.
Senior Football Championship Buncrana 1-12 St Naul’s 0-9
Buncrana was home to St Naul’s in the second leg of Intermediate Championship. This was a must win for Buncrana as they lost their first round game away to Ballyshannon.
St Naul’s opened the score with a point from play and then went two up after a Stephen Griffin free. Buncrana opened their score with a good point from play by Kevin O Loughlin. St Naul’s added two more Griffin points from frees but Buncrana replied with points from Doherty and Campbell.
Half time score was St Nauls 0-5 Buncrana 0-4. Buncrana would have been disappointed at half time as they had controlled the game but this did not reflect on the scoreboard. On resumption of the second half, Buncrana took the game to St Naul’s and Oisin Doherty scored two excellent points from play and a long range gem from Campbell put Buncrana 9 points to 7 points up.
The game was then in the balance when a long range ball went into Campbell who fielded, beat two defenders and rounded the goalkeeper to shoot the ball low to the net to effectively end the game as a contest. Buncrana added 3 more points to run out 1-12 to 0-9 winners.
This was an all round, good team performance from Buncrana, with excellent performances from Calvin Jones, Caolan Mc Gonagle, Garbhan Friel, Oisin Doherty and John Campbell. Buncrana team: Lee Mc Carron, Shane Mc Laughlin, Simon Cuffe, Conor Grant, Calvin Jones, Bruce Waldron, Kevin O Loughlin 0-2, Caolan Mc Gonagle 0-1, Garbhan Friel 0-2, Peter Mc Laughlin 0-1, Oisin Doherty 0-2, Adrian Doherty 0-1, John Campbell 1-2, Oran Doherty 0-1, Joseph Mc Grory.
Senior Reserve Football Championship Buncrana 1-13 St Naul’s 1-11
Our Senior Reserve game went right to the wire with a last, blast Noel McLaughlin goal, giving homeside a deserved win.
Former Donegal player and All Ireland winner, Ryan Bradley, played at full forward and showed his prowess, kicking some fine scores from frees and play. Despite dominating the game, the sides went in level at half time (six points each) with Sean Parker making a superb save from a penalty.
Again, the Buncrana side were in control in the early stages of the second half and opened up a four point lead and were seemingly on the way to victory until a great individual goal from St Naul’s midfielder, followed by a couple of points, put St Naul’s ahead as the game entered injury time.
A fine Buncrana move was finished off by 16-year-old McLaughlin, in as a second half substitute, to the roof of the net to seal a two point win for Malachy McCann’s men who have now qualified for the quarter finals with a game to spare. Gavin McElhinney returned to the side and young players, Conor O’Donnell, Mark O’Connell, Patrick Wilson and the excellent Aidan Stokes were very much to the fore. Sean Parker’s penalty save proved vital and overall this was a very good win despite the boys playing within themselves.
Senior Hurling Championship
Buncrana Senior Hurlers received a harsh lesson in the Senior Hurling Championship in Burt on Wednesday night, suffering their heaviest defeat in their short senior careers. Buncrana’s young charges took to the field with only four players over the minor age group and without their only two county senior players, with Jack and Dónal Óg not available.
This was a harsh lesson. Everyone involved in hurling in the Club knew that our venture into adult hurling was going to be hard. The seasoned Burt side was relentless in their desire to add to their already sizeable scoreline – a lesson that our young charges will learn from.
Massive credit must go to our dedicated bunch of hurlers who will regroup and play their last championship game against MacCumhaill’s on Wednesday, 26th August at 7pm.
The future, if any, of Donegal Hurling will need these players and the club’s dominance in recent years in underage hurling bodes well for the future. These young lads should not get disillusioned with the result and scoreline. Heads up, lessons learned. Bun Cranncha Abú.
