Match Reports
U16 Championship Rd 1 – Sean MacCumhaills 1 4 CLG Bun Cranncha 3 6
The Under 16 footballers played their first championship match of the season in poor weather conditions in MacCumhaill Park on Monday evening last. The Buncrana lads adapted best and quickest to the greasy conditions and opened the scoring with an Aaron Craig point.
Niall O Doherty got on the end of a rebound to flash the ball to the net shortly after and points followed from Peter O Neill and Adam Duffy from midfield to leave the half time score 1 3 to 2 points. The lads started the second period in a determined mood but had little to show for their early dominance.
Jason Campbell entered the fray and tucked away an excellent goal with his first touch to leave the Scarvey lads in a dominant position. In fairness to MacCumhaill’s, they upped their game and scored a goal and would have had another but for the outstanding save from goalkeeper Adam McLaughlin, whose kickouts were a highlight on the evening.
Two excellent late points from the ever willing Odhran Mullan followed a goal from Paul Tourish to seal the deal for Buncrana with an eight point victory who now look to play local rivals Naomh Padraig this Tuesday to secure a Northern Section semi-final spot.
The full back line up of John Paul McKenna, Garbhan McCarron and John Murphy were as miserable as the weather and their agression and determination was matched by Darran Connolly, Ben Doherty Roe and Oisin McDaid Roe in the half line. In midfield, Fiachra MacLochlainn and Adam Duffy controlled proceedings. Dylan Duffy operated in a sweeping roll and hoovered up a lot of ball and up top Niall O Doherty and Paul Tourish pulled the strings with Odhran Mullan, Ben Bradley, Peter O Neill, Jason Campbell, Jack Lynch and Aaron Craig all playing well and putting up a big score on a rotten night.
Squad on the evening: Dylan Hegarty, Shane Craig, Paul Tourish, Oisin Hegarty, Peter O Neill, Mark Craig, Odhran Mullan, Dylan Duffy, Jack Callaghan, Niall O Doherty, Jack Lynch, Eoin Redmond, Fiachra MacLochlainn, Oisin McDaid Roe, Darran Connolly, Aaron Craig, Ben Bradley, Ben Doherty Roe, Garbhan McCarron, John Murphy, John Paul McKenna, Keegan Hegarty, Adam McLaughlin, Jason Campbell, Adam Duffy. Thanks goes to Owen Roe and Malachy McCann who volunteered as umpires during the Monsoon!
U14 Championship – Buncrana 3 5 Red Hugh’s 2 7
These young men have now won their championship group and anxiously await the quarter final draw.
Minor Girls – Carndonagh 5 10 Buncrana 1 6
A very young squad made the journey to Carndonagh last Wednesday. They knew they had a hard job in front of them against an older and more experienced opposition. Carndonagh were the dominant side in the first half, but, despite creating most of the scoring chances, the Buncrana defence and in particular goalkeeper Lucy Jackson and full back Roisin Doherty (Dubh) kept the score line down and gave Buncrana a fighting chance at the end of the first half., Some positional changes and strong leadership shown by Louise Devlin and Ella McLaughlin saw our girls giving a better account of themselves in the second half. They were no longer second to the ball and were creating far more scoring chances which unfortunately they were unable to convert. Although the final score line shows a comprehensive victory for Carndonagh, it does not reflect the effort that our girls put in and how hard they made Carndonagh work ….. This was a very young squad that played yesterday and only 3 of these players will be overage next year. No doubt the experience of playing these hard games will benefit our younger players.
U16 Girls – Carndonagh 8 8 Buncrana 2 2
Our U16 girls had a tough start to their championship with an away game to Carndonagh on Tuesday. We have a very young team with half of it being made up of U14 girls. The girls were technically good on the ball but with such a young side, Carndonagh were physically stronger and it showed. There is plenty of promise with these girls and plenty of heart – they didn’t stop fighting until the final whistle. The score doesn’t really show a true reflection of the game. Carndonagh were more clinical in front of goal. At the end of the game the girls could still hold their heads up. There are plenty of games to be played yet and, if we play with the same heart, there will be plenty of victories too.
U10 Girls – Inishowen Go Games Finals
Our U10 girls put on a great display in Urris on Tuesday evening, coming second in their group. Well done girls for all your hard work and dedication.
Commiserations to our County minor hurlers who lost out to a Down side on Saturday in the All Ireland Minor B Hurling Championship quarter final. The game was played in poor conditions at Ballela GAC, Banbridge, Co Down. Buncrana was well represented on the day with seven players starting and ten in total on the panel.
