LAST YEAR, BUNCRANA’S ladies watched their neighbours from Carndonagh make a significant footprint in the Ulster Junior Ladies’ Championship.
After winning domestic honours, Carndonagh were on the verge of a provincial title, but having relinquished a six-point lead at Celtic Park in Derry went down in dying minutes to St Dympna’s of Dromore on a 2-13 to 2-7 scoreline.
From as early as last October, Buncrana spoke about the progress that Carndonagh had made and thought if they could put their own house in order there was a possibility of a Donegal JFC crown and then a pop at whatever might follow.
Last month at Hibernian Park, the side managed by Lawrence Hegarty and Brian Stokes saw their side come through a dramatic Donegal JFC final against Naomh Conaill, 1-10 to 2-6. Niamh Connolly was the goalscorer for the Inishowen dwellers.
Amy Casey, the Buncrana goalkeeper, saved a last minute penalty from Nicola Gallagher to seal the win.
“It was a good day and the girls certainly deserved it,” Hegarty (pictured above) said this week of that success. “We enjoyed the celebrations as it was something we’d been working at since last year. We spoke about Carnadonagh and how well they did and thought we might be able to follow in their footsteps.”
Now, this evening, throwing-in at 5pm, Buncrana are in Ulster action against St Paul’s B from Antrim at Scarvey.
“We don’t know an awful lot about them but from our own point of view, we’ve a fully fit panel to choose from and that’s a great way to start in what is out first year in Ulster,” Hegarty said. “A home draw is all you can ask for and we’re delighted to have that.”
