BUNCRANA UPSET the odds last night by defeating the defending champions Kilcar in the Michael Murphy Sports Under-21 Championship.
Buncrana 2-14 Kilcar 2-11
A scoring burst before half-time was the big period at The Scarvey as Buncrana dumped John McNulty’s holders out of this summer’s competition.
Buncrana were already in command through an earlier Conor O’Donnell goal when the really siezed control before the break.
[adrotate group=”68″]Caolan McGonagle, who made his Donegal senior debut this spring, rattled home a goal for the Inishowen side with points from Joseph McGrory, O’Donnell and Shane McClean.
That meant Buncrana led 2-8 to 0-7 at the break.
Darach O’Connor, who has just returned from a cruciate lay-off, was in excellent form for Buncrana, clipping five points.
Kilcar, who were without county minor panelists Daniel Lyons, Brian O’Donnell and Gary Molloy, did mount a comeback in the second half.
Midway through part two, Aodhán McGinley drifted in behind the Buncrana defence, turned his man and beat goalkeeper Sean Parker with a superb low finish.
Seven minutes later, Kilcar were right back in it when a second goal arrived, Jason Campbell fising home from a high ball across the danger zone.
Soon after, Kilcar had another goal chance, but Campbell rapped a blistering shot off the crossbar.
