THERE will be no repeat run for Glengad United to the latter stages of the FAI Junior Cup after the Crua men were beaten by Buncrana Hearts this afternoon.
Buncrana Hearts 2 Glengad United 1
Glengad were semi-finalists in the Cup last season, but are out following their loss at Castle Park today.
The visitors had the first half chance on 8 minutes but Patrick McDermott saw his effort saved by Eoghan O’Doherty in the Hearts goal.
At the other end a corner fell to Gary Duffy whose miscued effort fell to Eoin Murphy but he blazed over the bar.
Michael Carroll then flashed a header just wide following a corner before Glengad went within inches of scoring after McDermott’s curling shot went just past the top corner.
Buncrana broke the deadlock on 41 minutes after Kieran McDaid intercepted and advanced before finding John Timlin who drove low past Kevin McLaughlin.
In similar fashion they made it two nil on the stroke of half time with Timlin intercepting and advancing to find McDaid who squared for Mikey Friel to tap home.
Glengad got a lifeline on 53 minutes when a Stephen McLaughlin cross sum shot deceived O’Doherty and landed in the net.
Glengad dominated in terms of possession for the remainder of the game but failed to create any clear chances.
McDermott fired over from 20 yards and their best chance came on 69minutes when after a good move Terence Doherty saw his close range effort blocked on the line by Murphy.
On 86 minutes Christy Mclaughlin cut inside but fired over the bar.
With eight minutes of injury time the Hearts held on and caused a huge shock by disposing of last seasons semi finalists Glengad.
