BRYAN McNamee goes in search of his fourth Irish title on Friday night when the Convoy ABC man takes on Jack Conroy of Mullingar in the light-welterweight at the Open Senior Cadet Championships.
The Deele College student is three-from-three from his previous appearances upon the National Stadium’s canvas in Irish finals.
Back in March, McNamee overcame England’s Casey Brown when boxing for an Irish selection in Tenbury Wells, near Birmingham. The busy Calhame lad is now gunning for national glory as he squares up to the highly-rated Conroy.
McNamee overcame Patrick Nevin (Sparticus) in his semi-final on Saturday having beaten Jamie Harty from Rathkeale the previous evening in the quarter-final. Both his successes were recorded via unanimous decisions from the ringside judges.
Conroy, for his part, received a bye into the semis where he made light work of Airijus Vitlipas from St David’s.
McNamee is Donegal’s sole representative on finals night.
Last weekend, Finn Valley’s Leon Gallagher, Letterkenny’s Brian Elliott and Convoy duo Keenan Gibson and Ruaidhri Mcelhinney all bowed out.
Gallagher defeated Shane McCullough (Docklands) on Friday night, but he came unstuck in the semi-final as Peter McCartan from Bishop Kelly took the win.
At 80kgs, Blaine O’Brien from Clonmel defeated Elliott while Gibson fell against Anthony Johnston from Gleann at 75kgs and in a 70kgs quarter-final McElhinney was beaten by Bishop Kelly’s Peter McCartan.
There was also disappointment for St Johnston man Callum Toland, who was narrowly defeated by Clonmel’s Nathan Dalton in the preliminary round at 60kgs.
The IABA are running these Championships to assist with their selection process for the AIBA World Junior Championships, which take place in Russia in September.
