BRETT McGinty is through to the 69kgs final at the Commonwealth Youth Games.
McGinty overcame Australian boxer Jack Gipp thanks to a unanimous decision win at the Tuana’Imato Sports Facility in Samoa this morning.
The 16-year-old St Johnston man is now guaranteed at least a silver medal and could yet return home with a gold.
After overcoming Ryan Scaife in yesterday’s quarter-final, McGinty followed it up with another convincing win to see off Gipp, a promising puncher from Mornington.
Gipp had a majority decision (2-1) win over Samoan Alema Aukuso Leleisiuao in his quarter-final.
McGinty, who boxes out of the Oakleaf ABC in Derry’s Brandywell, had been unwell leading up to the Games, but he didn’t need any excuses.
All five Irish boxers in Samoa have reached finals with Stephen McKenna, James McGivern, Tiernan Bradley and Aidan Walsh also through to the finals of their weights.
