BRETT MCGINTY CLAIMED one of the biggest scalps of his career last night – and goes now in search of his seventh Irish title this afternoon.
Last night at The National Stadium, the St Johnston man defeated triple European champion Michael Nevin in a pulsating 69kgs semi-final at the National Under-18 Championships.
McGinty is in scintillating form these days and, six days after overcoming another former European champion, Jordan Myers from Sligo, in a quarter-final, he delivered a stunning reminder last night.
A cracking encounter was edged by Oakleaf ABC puncher McGinty, a silver medallist at the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa.
Nevin had beaten McGinty in a semi-final last year, but here McGinty was out for revenge – and he did it in fine fashion.
McGinty has been on the rise even since returning from Samoa, with a notable win over Myers back in January getting his year underway while he traveled to America with a County Antrim select last month and defeated Deonte Washington.
This win over Nevin was his most notable yet. McGinty, a European Schoolboy bronze medallist from 2012, was up against the Portlaoise man who won gold at those same European Schoolboy Championships four years ago.

In today’s final, McGinty meets Glasnevin’s Jordan Meredith, who defeated St Teresa’s James Cahill in the other semi-final last night.
There was no joy for Dungloe duo Mark McMonagle and Matthew McCole in quarter-finals last night.
At 56kgs, McMonagle was beaten by Andy McDonagh from St Paul’s, while Oliver McCarthy (Brian Dillons) held sway at 60kgs against McCole.
