BRETT MCGINTY leads the charge at the Under-18 Championships, which get underway on Friday night at the National Stadium.
It has been a tough and trying couple of weeks for Irish boxing, but the next kids on the block will do their thing upon the South Circular Road’s canvas from Friday evening.
Illies Golden Gloves’ John Moran and Brian Elliot, Dungloe’s Matthew McCole and Convoy’s Brian McNamee have all entered.
McGinty was beaten by Gurgen Madoyan in the European Youth Championships in Anapa. The St Johnston native, who boxes with Oakleaf ABC in Derry, had defeated Laszlo Kozak in his opening bout.
McGinty won his seventh Irish title earlier this year when he overcame triple European champ Michael Nevin, former European kingpin Jordan Myers and then Jordan Meredith.
On Friday night, he meets Jamie Harty from Rathkeale in a preliminary contest at 69kgs.
Dungloe’s Ulster 9 Counties champion Matthew McCole is also in preliminary action on Friday evening when the southpaw meets Andy McDonagh from St Paul’s, Waterford at 60kgs.
McNamee is a double Irish champion and the Convoy puncher will be in a quarter-final on Saturday as he faces Olympic’s Garbriel Dossan at 64kgs.
