BRENDAN BOYCE’S OLYMPIC year got underway with a 5k event in Paris today.
The Milford race-walker came home in second place behind Irish teammate Rob Heffernan over the 5,000 metres, clocking a time of 20 minutes 18.52 seconds.
Cork’s Heffernan came home in 19:35.58 at SPN Vernon event.
“Good opener to the season,” Boyce, a member of Letterkenny AC, said on facebook.
“Tried to go out hard today as a test and didn’t quite work out overall but still my fastest time for January and 2 more 5kms coming up to get under that 20min mark. Fantastic track and venue, thanks to SPN Vernon for inviting us over.”
Boyce plans to compete in Bratislava in the European Permit Indoor Meet and then the National Irish Indoors in Athlone at the end of February.
