THERE was disappointment for Brendan Boyce on the streets of Beijing at the IAAF World Athletics Championships this morning.
The Milford native (pictured above) was progressing well in the 50K walk, only to be disqualified at the 35-kilometre mark – where his time was 2:39:50 – for receiving a third red card.
Rob Heffernan from Cork, gold medalist from the championships two years ago, had to content with fifth place as Slovakia’s Matej Toth took gold.
Also in Beijing, Mark English was part of the 4 x400m team that broke the Irish record despite finishing eighth in their semi-final, clocking 3:01.26 – some 0.41 seconds inside the record set in finishing fifth at the European Championships in Zurich last year.
“I think we all ran out of our skins today,” Letterkenny native English said. “It’s a great time and the standard over 400m is incredible this year so it was always going to be a challenge, but we held our own.
“We ran our own races, and we probably got the best out of ourselves today with the national record.”
