DONEGAL UFC fans will get an opportunity to see Joseph Duffy fight in the flesh with a bout against Dustin Porier to take place in October in Dublin.
The Meenbanad, Burtonport, native (pictured above) is in the capital today for media appointments and this morning on TV3’s Ireland AM, confirmed the lightweight main event at the 3Arena on Saturday, 24 October.
“Coming up we’ve got a major card happening at UFC Dublin,” Duffy said. “I’m headlining against Dustin Porier. This will be my first time headlining. You climb the rankings and keep going to climb the ranking.
“I’m quite comfortable fighting wherever I am. This is what I have been doing since I was five years old. I’ve been training my whole life and I do this because I love it. I’ll look forward to fighting in front of my own crowd.”
Duffy was the last man to defeat Conor McGregor, the interim UFC Featherweight Champion. At Cage Warriors 39 in Cork back in 2010. Duffy, now 27, defeated ‘The Notorious’ after only 38 seconds by way of an arm-triangle choke.
Having previously operated in MMA, before concentrating on a boxing career, Duffy made his debut in the UFC back in March when he defeated American Jake Lindsey in Dallas, spectacularly stopping his opponent one minute and 47 seconds into their bout.
Then, earlier this month in Glasgow, Duffy took his record out to 14-1 with a first round win – three minutes and five seconds – over Ivan Jorge from Brazil.
Porier is relatively new to the lightweight division with the Louisiana native, who has a record of 18-4, recently winning in first round stoppages against Yancy Medeiros and Carlos Diego Ferreira.
Tickets will go on general sale for the Dublin event on Friday, September 4.
