DONEGAL HAVE the guts of an entirely different starting XV still watching on as they made it two from two in the Dr McKenna Cup.
After yesterday’s 1-17 to 0-10 win over Down in Newry, the side managed by Declan Bonner know if they avoid defeat against Cavan at home on Wednesday night, they will make the semi-finals of the competition next weekend – hoping to add to last year’s success in the provincial curtain-raiser that helped them springboard onto victory in the Ulster championship.
Afterwards, Bonner confirmed that three players who were there for Barry Cassidy’s final whistle in Newry will be lining out for Gary McDaid’s Under-20’s when they get their Ulster championship underway away to Fermanagh on June 30.
The players are Peadar Morgan, Paddy Dolan and Oisin Gallen.
“We are working hard,” Bonner said. “Three of the guys who finished the match are all Under 20s this season, they’ll be playing 20’s this season. I was counting there are about 15 lads who will probably be involved come championship time who are not here today so it’s giving lads an opportunity. It gives you hope moving forward with these lads and they are a really committed bunch of lads.”
When asked whether the seniors wouldn’t see any of the three in the summer perhaps, Bonner added: “We’ll see as the season progresses! There may be a rule change coming there, I’m not too sure!”
