THERE IS NO shortage of Donegal interest in Sunday’s Ulster 9 Counties finals at the Halway House in Burnfoot.
The finals for boys and girls aged 11, 12 and 13, are being hosted by the Illies Golden Gloves club.
A total entry of 152 boxers began the tournament with the finals set to be held on Sunday, the first bell going at 12 noon.
Also up for grabs is The John McIlree Memorial Trophy, which will be awarded to the Best Boxer of the Championships.
[adrotate group=”81″]LJ Gill from St Bridget’s Clonmany will face Dezi McAleavey from Newy in the Boy 1 27kgs decider, while Josh McDonagh from Dunree is up against St John’s Oisin O’Kane in the Boy 1 33kgs final with Dunfanaghy’s Bernie McDonagh taking on Andrew Ward of St Malachy’s in the Boy 1 39kgs final.
There is an all-Donegal final at Boy 2 50kgs as Raphoe’s Liam Crawford meets Adam Boyle from Dungloe.
Tommy de Ward of Twin Towns takes on St John’s puncher Oisin Quinn in the Boy 2 final at 48kgs and Killian Durning will hope to take the Boy 2 42kgs title to Dunfanaghy ABC as he faces Michael Maughan from St Malachy’s.
Carndonagh ABC have produced some fine female boxers in recent years and Clodagh McGonigle is another on that production line. She faces Makenzie Murray in the Girl 2 final at 44kgs.
Dunfanaghy ABC’s Odhrán Doogan will meet Peter Convery from St John’s in the Boy 3 48kgs final.
A number of Donegal boxers are guaranteed titles via walkover wins: Katie Mulhern (Bundoran, Girl 1 60kgs), Kyle McGonigle (St Bridget’s, Boy 2 63kgs), Shania McCloskey (Carndonagh, Girl 3 50kgs), Kira McMenamin (Twin Towns, Girl 3 52kgs) and Pauric O’Donnell (Dungloe, Boy 3 60kgs).
There is also an outstanding semi-final with Raphoe’s Aaron McDaid to take on Shea O’Kane of St Canice’s in a Boy 1 36kgs bout.
