Banda hat-trick for Harps among the Donegal highlights of Foyle Cup day two

BJ BANDA netted a deadly hat-trick as Finn Harps Under-19s overcame Old Park Reds from Belfast to move into a commanding position in their section of the 2015 Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup. 

The former Letterkenny Rovers striker put Joe Boyle’s side (picture above by Stephen Doherty) ahead with a fine solo effort, dancing in from the right flank to fire home.

Banda riffled in from close range for a second and he completed his hat-trick in the second half as the Ballybofey outfit eye a title tilt when they face Institute on Wednesday evening.

Naoise O Baoill bagged a first-half double as Letterkenny Rovers defeated Killen Rangers. Killen pulled a goal back, but the Cathedral Town side held on for a win and they now take on Ballyjamesduff in Dungiven.

Aileach take on top Scottish side Motherwell who have been blitzing all before them, but the Inishowen side themselves have been enjoying a solid start to the competition.

Kevin McHugh’s all-conquering Donegal Schoolboys Under-13s whacked Ballymoney 9-0 and are poised to be real contenders. The National Cup winners had goals from Conor Black (2), Jason McDaid (2), Dylan Dorrian (2), Donal McBride, Finian O’Donnell and Ronan McKinley.

The Donegal Under-15s recorded a 3-1 win over Glenavon while Inishowen (9-0 against Coleraine) and Finn Harps (7-0 against Draperstown) had big wins in that section.

In the Under-14s, Inishowen League lost 2-0 against Celtic in a battling performance. A David McKay penalty (picture below by Lorcan Doherty Photography) and a second goal from Kieran McGrath secured a win for the Hoops. Inishowen were the better side in the second period but couldn’t quite find the quality up front.

Jack McDowall kept the Celtic defence well organised and won a couple of important headers as the Scottish giants withstood further pressure.

Kildrum Tigers had late heartache in the Under-17 competition. Jonny McGinty’s side led Carniny Youths and forced their way back to level in the dying moments only for a sucker-punch to hit them right at the end for a 3-2 loss.

At St Columb’s Park in the Ladies section, defending champions Greencastle FC scored a fine 2-0 win over Lagan Harps. After contrasting results on the opening night – when Greencastle were beaten by Derry City and Lagan trounced Roe Valley 11-0 – it was the Inishowen girls who took the win.

Lagan now face Derry City with Greencastle meeting Roe Valley. Lagan are playing without the likes of Lauren Harper, Nadine Crawford, Bernie Cunningham, Eimear McClafferty, Emma McKinley and Catherine Fletcher.
