OLLIE HORGAN PRAISED HIS never-say-die Finn Harps after their refusal to accept defeat against Derry City.
Trailing 2-1, after Josh Daniels and Rory Patterson netted for Derry to cancel out Ryan Curran’s opener for Harps, Horgan’s men conjoured up a late equaliser as Sean Houston headed home in stoppage time.
In a ground at which Harps have never won in the League, their narratives have been all-too-similar at Brandywell, but Houston’s goal earned Horgan’s men a priceless away point.
“We may not have the quality of players that they have, but we try to make up for that in other ways, as we showed with the equalising goal,” Horgan told Donegal Sport Hub.
“We make up with it in work-rate, character and honesty. Those lads will never throw in the towel.
“It was backs-to-the-walls stuff for the majority of the game, albeit we played very well in the first 20 minutes and deservedly went ahead. From there on, Derry City took over. They’re an excellent side.
“They came down the right with chance after chance.
[adrotate group=”50″]“At 2-1 down in injury time, we showed great character and resolve, we went one more time and came up with the equaliser, a very decent goal of our own.
“We went three at the back and went for it.”
Curran headed Harps in front after a Dave Scully shot cannoned off the crossbar and, with Ciaran Gallagher excellent, Horgan admitted that there were moments when he thought that the impossible might just be possible.
[adrotate group=”38″]He said: “There is a part of you thinking with 12 minutes to go: ‘Can we hold on and win this?’ Our luck was in. We defended well, despite Ciaran being kept as busy, bar dealing with the threat down the right.
“Even when we equalised they had a chance for Nathan Boyle at the back post that came down that side.
“There aren’t many teams at 2-1 down who will get a point from here.”
Harps have little time to prepare for their next assignment, which sees them face League champions Dundalk at Finn Park on Friday night.
[adrotate group=”46″]“It’s only one game out of 33, so we have to move on and we kind of have already moved on.”
