SEAN AND IRENE MCFADDEN created a little bit of history at the Donegal Sports Star awards last night.
Together, it was a husband and wife success with both picking up prizes. It’s the first time a husband and wife have ever won awards side-by-side.
Sean won the Race last March, Ireland’s first 24-hour endurance event – a 250km trek around Donegal – which was the main reason he lifted the Brendan McDaid Special Achievement award.
Irene is a teacher at Scoil Mhuire gan Smál, Letterkenny, where she organises a wide range of sporting activity, on top of promoting a healthy eating programme.
Their daughter Shauna was also nominated for the cycling award.
“Donegal as a town is so competitive and we’re glad just to be playing a part in it,” Sean said. “Sport is a great part of our family.”
Irene added: “It’s fantastic and sport isn’t all about winning. The schoolchildren love it. In our school we’re lucky as they love it. they embrace it.”
