THE DONEGAL MANAGER, Rory Gallagher, says he’s quite content for the expectancy levels to rise following last night’s facile win over Down in Newry.
Donegal had 17 points to spare on the Mourne County. Ryan McHugh’s pair of second half goals, either side of a goal by Patrick McBrearty, and alongside the imperious free taking of Michael Murphy, helped Donegal to win 3-14 to 0-7.
While it was a first away win in almost seven years in Division 1, it was the perfect way to start the League campaign and supporters leaving Pairc Esler were certainly in high spirits.
“I totally understand the expectancy, but we’re happy to live with that because the team is doing a lot of things right,” Gallagher told Donegal Sport Hub.
“We have Cork on Sunday and we expect that to be a tough battle. Winning back-to-back games in Division 1 is something that we have struggled to do in Division 1.
“We want to win maybe two or three consecutively – we want to show some consistency.”
Goalkeeper Peter Boyle – making his first appearance in the League since 2011 – saved a first-half penalty from Donal O’Hare, but Donegal never looked in too much danger.
Gallagher handed League debuts to Micheál Carroll, Ciaran Thompson, Stephen McBrearty and Caolan McGonagle last night.
Gallagher said: “We were a bit apprehensive going into the game. We had a fairly inexperienced group of players, but they acquitted themselves fairly well and the old hands helped them through it.”
