PETER O’DONNELL, the President of the Donegal Boxing Board, has hailed Brett McGinty following the St Johnston man’s winning of an eighth Irish title.
McGinty stopped the Bay City boxer in the third round. Having lost the first round, McGinty set to work and landed the title – and a place on the Irish team for this year’s World Championships in Russia.
To put McGinty’s haul of honours into some perspective, Jason Quigley is an eleven-time Irish champion. Finn Valley’s Michael Gallagher (10) and Austeja Auciute (9) won more, as did Steven O’Reilly of Twin Towns (10) but the list of those in that stratosphere isn’t a long one with only Carndonagh’s Labhaoise Clarke, who also claimed eight Irish titles, now on a par in Donegal.
McGinty has been in a star-studded welterweight division that also included former European kingpin Jordan Myers, who he defeated in last Saturday’s semi-final.

“Brett didn’t get going until the second round, but when he did get going he destroyed him.
“It was a bout that many men in the stadium thought was a toss of a coin, but when Brett got going he was just on fire.”
McGinty has boxed three times at European Championships, winning a bronze medal at the 2012 European Schoolboys Championships, while he won a silver medal at last year’s Commonwealth Youth Games.
Now, he’ll go to his first World Championships.
[adrotate group=”37″]O’Donnell said: “He is in great order and he’ll do very well out there, going on his latest form anyway. He’s getting better and better. He’s got great work rate and he’s super fit – he never runs out of steam.”
