PAURIC O’DONNELL WAS a student at Coláiste na Carraige and now teaches at Abbey Vocational School.
The Naomh Columba clubman was delighted to hear of the Carrick-based school won the Danske Bank Arthurs Cup (Ulster Under-16A) yesterday when they defeated Breifne Cup in Omagh.
Tonight, at Garvahey, O’Donnell’s Abbey Vocational School lifted the Markey Cup – the provincial Under-18A equivalent – for the first time. Abbey will now go onto the represent Donegal in the All-Ireland series, with his Schools’ champions taking on the MacLarnon Cup winners.
Holy Trinity Cookstown will meet Patrician High School from Carrickmacross in that final on St Patrick’s Day.
“I’m delighted for Carrick. They’re a bit like ourselves – they tasted defeat too many times,” he said. “For us, we will play the MacLarnon winners and it will be a good test. Tonight, my team, they all stood up. I thought it would never end. I’m very proud of them boys. We sniffed at success for a few years and finally we go it. They deserve everything we get after that.”
