PAURIC MCKINNEY SET A new national record for a 5k by a 50+ athlete on Sunday.
The 50-year-old Inishowen AC athlete came home in second place, behind the winner Barry Herron, at the Donegal 5k Road Championships in Letterkenny.
McKinney’s time of 15 minutes 31 seconds was eight seconds quicker than the previous record for the category.
“I had an absolute flyer today,” McKinney (pictured above right with Danny Mooney, left, and Barry Herron) told Donegal Sport Hub.
“At Ballyraine School, Barry Herron took off and I just decided to commit. It’s great to get the record and to be second in a Donegal senior at 50.”
McKinney, who is coached by City of Derry’s Colin Roberts, heads to Berlin in a fortnight to compete in a marathon.
