THE REALITIES OF life in the Premier Division hit home for Finn Harps last night as Ollie Horgan’s men went down 3-0 against champions Dundalk.
An injury to Ciaran Coll that seems certain to rule the St Johnston man out long-term is the latest in a growing casualty list that already includes long-term absentees Barry Molloy, Sean Houston, Josh Mailey and Michael Rafter.
Goalkeeper Ciaran Gallagher started a new job in Pramerica on Monday and couldn’t get off his shift there, meaning he had to miss out on the game, with Richard Brush stepping in for his debut.
“It probably puts things in perspective that we couldn’t get a player off today to play,” Horgan told Donegal Sport Hub.
“He had to work to earn his corn. They’ll get up the road tonight and have to work tomorrow.
“That’s the nature of it, but we know what it is. The odds are stacked against us, but we’ll fight and see where it gets us.”
Harps host Shamrock Rovers on Monday night with Horgan’s squad stretching just two games into the season and the Harps manager has appealed for supporters not to give in.
Horgan has vowed that neither he nor his players will give up the fight.
“I don’t want to sound too negative – and I think people aren’t happy with me being ‘too pessimistic – but, look, it is what it is,” Horgan said.
“It’s a fact. It’s not me playing it down and saying ‘we are going to struggle’. We are going to struggle, financially and football wise.
“On and off the pitch, the odds are stacked against us, but we’ll fight and the players, to their credit, they gave everything, as they have from day one.
“It is difficult and I have tried to explain that. People don’t want to listen to me when I say that, but it is a savage League.
“Most of these players go to work tomorrow, they have work on Monday – we all have work on Monday – and then on Monday night they play Shamrock Rovers. Minus three of our better players, who will be out long term.
“We knew what it was about and I just hope that people realise that they need to be very patient with us and support us through thick and thin – because it most certainly will be that.”
