GARY MCDAID FELT that a poor start cost his St Eunan’s College side in yesterday afternoon’s Corn Colmcille semi-final against St Columb’s College.
Shea Browne’s two goals helped St Columb’s to a 2-8 to 1-8 win in Buncrana.
Browne’s first goal, a penalty, laid the platform and while Shane Monaghan’s goal made a game of it late in the day, St Eunan’s couldn’t conjour a response in the final seven minutes.
“We didn’t play until the last five minutes of the first half,” McDaid observed.
“The day and the occasion got to them at the start. We talked about that at half-time and we rectified that – they were much better in the second half.
“Shea Browne is a key man and a class act for them. We put Oran Brogan on him and he nullified a lot of Browne’s strong points.
“He was putting up high scores in the campaign. He cut down on a lot of his possession count, but Browne was the difference in the end.”
McDaid believes that the ground work being done at Sentry Hill will reap dividends in the coming years. Peter McGeehin is working with sixth class pupils from local primary schools before they enter St Eunan’s to give them a head start.
McDaid added: “We ran a first year league back in October. There is massive work being done. These boys want to walk in the footsteps of the giants who’ve gone before them. They want their picture on the wall before they leave the school.”
