MICHAEL DEENEY took the job of Milford United’s manager not quite knowing what to expect – but he believes the Moyle View Park side are something of a ‘throwback’.
Deeney, who played in the Scottish League with Greenock Morton, took the job on the eve of the new season having been assistant manager to Jason Gibson at Swilly Rovers after a previous spell as manager of Fanad United.
Deeney saw his Milford side overcome derby rivals Rathmullan Celtic on Sunday in the FAI Junior Cup.
A Niall Carruthers goal just before half-time saw Milford go behind, but Joey Cullen, Mark Flood and Kyle Black turned the tide. Ryan Connolly pulled one back for Rathmullan while Milford had Damien Casey sent off late in the game, but Deeney’s men held on for a 3-2 win.
“I have to give Peter Doherty credit, he got the boys fired up for the second half,” Deeney told Donegal Sport Hub.
“I was looking for a reaction and I got it.
“My intention was to take a year out, but I was approached for the position here.
“The players are better than I thought. It’s like an old-style football team. It’s like a throwback here. It’s what football should be about. I’m confident about our chances.
“It was a super performance by our boys. The pitch wasn’t ideal, but there was a lot of football played. That’s what I wanted to get involved in, for games like that. I’m over the moon with the result.”
