LYIT DONEGAL BASKETBALL CLUB play their first game in the National Basketball League tomorrow when they host University of Ulster Elks.
Niall McDermott, who is the North-West Regional Development Officer of Basketball Ireland, is the head coach of the LYIT Donegal team that will compete in Division 1 of the League.
“We’re dying to get going,” McDermott told Donegal Sport Hub.
“It’s been a six-month process, getting everything sorted. It’s been a lot of work and a lot of planning. We can’t wait to get onto the court now to see how we do.
“One of the biggest challenges was getting all the players together. Hopefully we’ll get better and better as the season goes on.”
There is a strong Donegal representation in the squad with Zak Balogun, Rahman Balogun, Paul McHugh, Mark Cannon, Stephen Cannon, Michael Leadley and David Whoriskey all included in the panel.
The LYIT Donegal team also includes American’s T-John Casiello and Jack Mackey who are studying in LyIT as part of the Sport Changes Life programme.
On tomorrow’s game and the season ahead, McDermott said: “The Elks are really, really strong. It’ll be hard to stop them. We have a game plan so we will stick to that. It will be a learning process.
“We just want to see improvement from game to game and pick up some confidence. We have talented players, but we just don’t have the experience of this level.”
