MARTIN RUSSELL’S LIMERICK FC are still on course for the Great Escape.
Without so much as a single win in their first 21 matches in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division this term, their remarkable turn of form saw them avoid automatic relegation with a dramatic 3-2 win over Sligo Rovers on Friday.
Then in the first leg of the promotion-relegation play-off final, Shaun Kelly from Killybegs scored the only goal as the Munster side defeated Finn Harps by a goal to nil.
Limerick manager Martin Russell was content enough with the win but was complimentary towards Harps ahead of the second leg on Friday night in Ballybofey.
“It wasn’t the for the lack of trying,” Russell said. “Harps are a touch nut to crack. Credit to Ollie Horgan and his bunch of players. They battled hard and we know we have got a touch mission.”
