FINN HARPS Under-19 manager Joe Boyle was ‘bitterly disappointed’ to lose out to Galway United in extra-time last night in the Enda McGuill Cup.
Kealan McDermott and Simon McGlynn had Harps 2-0 ahead with 14 minutes left and Gareth Doherty saw a penalty saved by Kevin Horgan, but Andrew Connolly and Ciaran Nugent gave Galway the lifelines.
“It’s bitterly disappointing to be 2-0 up and lose any game,” Boyle said.
“We kept giving away free kicks and allowed them to load our box. We normally defend them well. It’s disappointing. We started slowly and Galway were ready for it.
“We struggled all night, but we missed a penalty, got 2-0 up and that should have been it.”
The manner of the goals is something that haunted Harps, usually so sound in those moments.
Boyle said: “It’s not typical of our defence. Individual errors cost us, but I have faith that they’ll bounce back for the rest of the season. We have to get on with it and make sure that it doesn’t happen again.”
Harps are on course to make the knockout phase of the Under-19 League but face a big two weeks now. On Sunday, they face leaders St Patrick’s Athletic at Richmond Park before Derry City go to Ballybofey the following weekend.
Boyle said: “We have to make sure that we secure our place in the play-offs for the League. We have Pat’s and Derry in the next two weeks so we have to bounce back.”
