JOE BOYLE HAS BEEN pleased with how his Finn Harps Reserves have fitted in on their return to the Ulster Senior League.
Harps withdrew their reserve side from the USL in January 2015 following a difficult start to that season, but they’ve been competitive since coming back in this season.
Boyle, who is also Under-19 manager at Finn Park, sees the obvious benefits.
“It’s been challenging. We are young, but that’s why we’ve come back in – to play against these type of teams,” Boyle told Donegal Sport Hub.
“It’s preparing them for the senior step up. Very few 18 or 19-year-olds are ready to step straight into senior level so this is a part of the programme we’re working.
“It’s all about trying to bridge the gap and these boys all want to play.”
McCready cancelled out Darren McElwaine’s opener for Rovers and, after Harps took command McElwaine and David Shovlin denied Boyle’s team a big scalp.
Boyle said: “They played well. We got the ball down and passed it.
“We’re delighted with the performance, but we need to be a wee bit more clever and smarter to see out the game near the end.
“We still had a chance near the end, but we’re delighted. We take these games to give the boys a chance to play against experienced players. For us, it’s a learning curve.”
