HUGH ‘RUA’ GALLAGHER saw his Gweedore Celtic beaten on penalties by Rathmullan Celtic yesterday in the FAI Junior Cup, but their good start to the campaign has given rise to optimism out west.
Player-manager Dara Patton netted the winner after Gweedore’s Jay Dee Alawiye saw his effort come off the post.
“When it goes to penalties it’s always a lottery,” Gallagher told Donegal Sport Hub after the game.
“Rathmullan dominated us and we didn’t create a whole pile of chances. Our defence played well and soaked up pressure, but we didn’t create enough up front.”
Last year, Gweedore needed penalties to defeat Lagan Harps in a play-off to preserve their top-flight status, but with three wins out of five games so far, they’re neatly poised, a point off the leading trio of teams – St Catherine’s, Rathmullan and Castlefin Celtic – at the top of the table.
Gallagher said: “Last season was terrible. Some days we went out with only 11 or 12 players. I have a panel of 20 now and they’re putting in an effort. The priority at the minute is to consolodate.”
