Glenfin man John Campbell created history last Friday night as he was inducted into the Donegal Sports Star Awards’ Hall of Fame.
The 80-year-old was the Donegal Sports Star of the Year in 1982 and went into the Hall of Fame on Friday at the Mount Errigal Hotel.
A nine-time winner of the clay pigeon shoot category, he was the overall winner in ’82, when he became the first Irishman to break 100 Possible at the Grand American in Ohio.
This Hall of Fame award was a record 11th award he collected at the Donegal Sports Star Awards.
“It’s an honour,” he said.
[adrotate group=”46″]“It’s a very prestigious award. I never anticipated in being awarded this, but it is great that it has come, even at these late years for me.”
He got started in the sport by Letterkenny man John McCrossan, who won the clay pigeon shoot award in 1976.
Campbell recalled: “I wasn’t doing much shooting, but he landed up to the office one morning and he had this new gun with him. He put it on the desk and said: ‘You’re buying that. It’ll get you started in shooting’.”
