GLENGAD UNITED won the Jackie Crossan Premier Division title for the first time in the club’s history last season, but manager Shane Byrne says they face a tougher-than-ever race to retain the Inishowen League crown this time.
Glengad have won eight trophies over the last three seasons, but the jewel undoubtedly arrived in May when Paddy McDermott’s goal handed them a 1-0 win over Aileach FC in a tense title play-off at Maginn Park.
“That was the one we wanted to win,” Byrne told Donegal Sport Hub this week.
“We were runners up for two years on the trot so Glengad celebrated for three weeks after it!”
Nigel McMonagle has been recruited from Moville Celtic over the summer which Michael Byrne is back from a hip injury and the title defence began with a 3-1 success over Moville on Sunday.
This Sunday, Byrne takes his men to Chapel Lane for a meeting with Greencastle FC.
Looking ahead to the campaign, he said: “There are a few good teams in Inishowen – it’s a very good League.
“We are going into another hard season. Teams will cause us problems again and they’ll all be tight games.”
The Glengad United manager also has some interesting views on the Ulster Senior League and why Inishowen teams are reluctant to step up.
